Bloomsbury is following the newly updated curriculum for Early Years
There are seven areas of learning and development that must shape educational programmes in Early Years settings. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive. The seven areas are:
At Bloomsbury, play is at the heart of everything we do – and we also believe in giving children a strong foundation in key skills. Alongside rich, play-based experiences, our teachers introduce early reading, writing, and maths in engaging, age-appropriate ways that ensure children are well prepared for their future learning.
Phonics
Twinkl Phonics
We use the Twinkl Phonics programme, a systematic and structured approach that helps children build secure foundations in reading and writing that is approved for use in English schools. Phonics sessions are fun, active, and multi-sensory – using songs, games, and stories to help children recognise sounds, blend them together, and develop confidence as early readers.
Maths
Master the Curriculum
In the Early Years, our teaching of mathematics is guided by the British Early Years Foundation Stage framework, We use Master the Curriculum, which is designed to build deep understanding of number, shape, and measure. Lessons are practical and hands-on, encouraging children to explore concepts through play, problem-solving, and real-life contexts. This mastery approach ensures children not only learn to count and calculate, but also develop reasoning skills and a love for maths.
English
Talk for Writing
From Nursery, we begin introducing Talk for Writing, a highly effective approach that develops children’s vocabulary, imagination, and understanding of story structure. Through storytelling, role play, and shared writing, children learn how language works and start to create their own stories. This early exposure builds confidence, creativity, and a love of communication.
By combining these high-quality programmes with our play-based ethos, we ensure children leave the Early Years as confident communicators, enthusiastic readers, and curious problem-solvers, ready to thrive in the next stage of their education.
