LEARNING THROUGH PLAY – AND WHY IT WORKS

Our approach to learning is rooted in play combined with short, focused direct teaching sessions for phonics and maths. Play is the most natural and effective way for young children to develop but it is never “just play” – it is a powerful tool for building knowledge, skills, and understanding.

In our classrooms, play is thoughtfully planned to promote exploration, problem-solving, and creativity, while also providing the structure children need to succeed. Alongside rich play experiences, we also teach key skills explicitly, ensuring children are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.

At Bloomsbury, children:

Develop language, communication, and confidence through role play, storytelling, and conversation

Build early literacy through a systematic phonics programme, helping them to become confident readers and writers

Explore early mathematics through hands-on problem-solving, pattern-making, counting, and reasoning

Express themselves through art, music, movement, and imaginative play

Grow in independence and resilience, developing the qualities of lifelong learners.

Our teachers design experiences that are joyful, purposeful, and carefully tailored to each child’s stage of development. By combining play with structured teaching, we ensure that every child is supported, challenged, and inspired to achieve their very best.
