PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Primary School at Bloomsbury provides a dynamic learning environment to instil a love of learning in all areas of work and play, through a broad and balanced curriculum. The Primary School comprises key stages one and two in accord with the UK educational system. Programmes in Primary School are designed to provide students with fundamental skills in reading, writing and mathematics and to establish a solid foundation for learning.

KEY STAGE 1

Years 1 and 2

In Years 1 and 2 (Key Stage 1), our students aged 5-7 follow the English National Curriculum, adapted to suit our local context. All children study:

  • English
  • Thai (with separate programmes for speakers of Thai as a first or as an additional language)
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Topic (which includes history and geography)
  • Art
  • Computing
  • Art
  • Mandarin Chinese
  • Music
  • Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
  • Physical Education (PE)

In English we focus heavily on phonics in Year 1, using a UK approved systematic synthetic phonics programme. We use the ever-popular Oxford Reading Tree and the highly effective Talk for Writing approach.

We use White Rose Maths to support our delivery of that subject.

Global Citizenship Education is a theme that runs through the curriculum.

We assess students’ progress using online standardised tests in reading and maths three times per year.

KEY STAGE 2

Years 3-6

In Years 3-6 (Keys Stage 2), our children aged 7-11 continue to follow the English National Curriculum adapted to suit our local context. All children study:

  • English
  • Thai (with separate programmes for speakers of Thai as a first or as an additional language)
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Topic (which includes history and geography)
  • Art
  • Computing
  • Mandarin Chinese
  • Music
  • Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
  • Physical Education (PE)

Students read a wide range of texts and we carefully support their growth as readers through the PM benchmarking scheme. Talk for Writing continues to play a central role in our English programme. Additional support is provided by the English as an Additional Language team for children who are not yet able to access the curriculum independently.

We use White Rose Maths to support our delivery of that subject.

Global Citizenship Education is a theme that runs through the curriculum.
